Hiking The Ozarks


Backpacking consists of exercising and browsing new trails around the world. The backpacking organization that is offered throughout our council consists of the following:
Basic skills of camping out in the outdoors
Must have knowledge of lightweight, but nutritious, foods
Should have a little practice of walking around with your pack on your back
Must have the right equipment
You might want to collect information about the trail
Our Council recommends the following Packtrackers equipment:
Pack Frame and pack/hip belt Turtleneck shirt
Sleeping bag (in plastic bag in stuff sack) Windbreaker
Tent Personal first-aid kit include:
Foam Pad (knee length) Moleskin
Hiking boots or padded sneakers Sun screen
Plastic bowl, cup Insect Repellant
Spoon (does not have to be plastic)
2 water bottles of canteens (1 qt. each) Emergency kit in ziploc:
Pocket knife 1-2 sheets of foil folded
Flashlight Fire starters
Matches in water proof container Whistle
Compass Extra matches
50 ft. nylon rope Flashlight batteries & bulb
Trowel/toilet paper Safety pins
Poncho or rain suit
Wading shoes in plastic bag Personal gear in ziploc
3 lg. plastic trash bags Deodorant, toothbrush & paste
Stock hat Lip balm soap, comb or brush
Sweater or long sleeved shirt Washcloth
(Wool or synthetic not cotton)
Sun glasses Dishwashing:
Long underwear (to sleep in) Scrubee, bleach, dish liquid (put in
Bandanna nasal spray size plastic bottle)
Gloves or mittens
1- No. 10 tin can with handle Changes of clothes:
(Roll clothes tightly and pack in a plastic bag)
Underwear
Tee shirt
Shorts
Long pants
Socks
The 10 Essentials List
The following items should be carried by all backpackers and by all day hikers or campers going
away from the campsite for any length of time.
1. Extra clothing-sweater or jacket, rain gear (poncho) or sheet of plastic.
2. Extra food- this should be in addition to the planned meal. Jerky or pemmican, bouillon cubes, etc/.
3. Sun glasses and/or sun screen- in this area sun glasses are not always necessary, sun screen frequently is Insect repellent could come here.
4. Knife- scout type with blade, can opener, screwdriver.
5. Fire stater- trench candles, egg cartons/sawdust, sheet of foil to set this on if ground is wet.
6. Matches- these are in addition to the matches carried for cooking, etc. Should be waterproof,windproof,or in water-proof container.
7. First-aid kit-minimum contents:
Band-aids Gauze pads
Adhesive Tape Aspirin or Tylenol
Needle First-aid manual
Moleskin Water purification tablets
Antacid & diarrhea pills
8. Flashlight-small with extra batteries and bulb. A small unbreakable mirror to signal
with is another good idea.
9. Map- topographic is best, can also use forest service or other depending on area.
Be familiar with the map before you leave home.
10. Compass-orienteering type is best. Practice using at home.
