What is Leader's Weekend?

Leader's Weekend is an annual event for all Girl Scout Leaders and Adult Volunteers in Dogwood Trails Girl Scout Council. It is held at Finbrooke Outdoor Center near Rogersville, Missouri usually near the end of April. It is timed to coincide with Girl Scout Leaders Day and Girl Scout Leaders Week. The Event starts at 6:00 pm on Friday and continues through 2:00 pm on Sunday. Adults may attend all or any part of the event as they wish and come and go as they please, following check-in and check-out procedures. Overnight accommodations are available in the Camp Units and meals are available. Pre-registration and pre-payment is required to attend. A variety of workshops are offered to the participants on Saturday with other activities scheduled during the course of the weekend. Workshops ususally involve a choice of crafts, nature and outdoor activities, and leadership development. Participants may also elect free time to relax in place of a scheduled workshop. Fees are charged on a per-meal basis and craft class fees are determined by the presenter. Many of the other workshops have no fee and there are no registration fees for the entire event. A theme for the event is usually given and many of the workshops may center around that theme. The five worlds of Girl Scouting are also given attention on a year-to-year basis.
Why should I attend this event?

Although this may look like a massive training in disguise, it is really a chance to go and learn from other leaders as well as to learn from the workshops. The event is based upon the trickle-down theory: namely that if we can teach something to our Leaders that they didn't know before, then they may well take that back to their troops and share it with their girls. It offers a hand-on approach to learning and the opportunity to make a lot of new friends. Attendance at this event will usually number between one-hundred and one-hundred fifty Leaders, with fity to sixty of them camping and staying for the entire event. It brings members of all thirty eight of our Service Units together to share ideas on what we do. It is safe to say that the participants of this event are the cream of the crop in our council! They are the do-or-die Leaders who tend to lead the rest, so by brushing elbows with them, everyone will become a better Leader!

Some of the Themes for Leader's Weekend have been:

Leader's Weekend Rapp

"We're sitting here trying to write a song

But everything we say is wrong-

We are here to have some fun-

We spent all day on the run.

We played some games-who cares who won?

We learned about drugs and they're no fun.

(Chorus:)

Leader's Weekend-what a blast!

Trouble is, it went too fast.

We're gonna freeze tonight, that's a fact,

Hope you brought a blanket in your pack.

We had outdoor fun for indoor folks,

Sang some songs and told some jokes.

Got to know our neighbors, made some friends,

Now this is where this rapp will end."

(Repeat chorus twice.)

Written by the Leaders who attended the April, 1988 Leader's Weekend.
