Registration Forms are found in the forms section of the current Dogwood. If additional copies are needed, you may make copies or ask your council staff for additional forms. Only those who have pre-registered will be notified if a course is canceled or the location has changed. Please send in all monies with your registration.

Incomplete registrations or registration forms without required fees will not be processed until all necessary forms and fees are received. The name of your Service Unit on your registration is very important.
Registrations must be received 10 days before the event.
The event could be canceled if enough registrations have not been received at the Service Center 10 days before the event. Most trainings fill up early, so please send in your registration as soon as possible to ensure your placement in the desired training. Your name will be placed on a waiting list if the training is full and you would like to be notified if there is a cancellation. There is no guarantee that you will get into a training once it is full.
A reminder will be sent prior to the event.
You will also be notified if the event is full, canceled or there is a problem with your registration.
Refunds or Cancellations:
Refunds will be made only when the council is notified of cancellation 10 days prior to the course, or if the course is cancelled by the council. Due to processing costs, all refunds of $5.00 or less will be in the form of a credit to The LadyBug Shop.

Because plans for some trainings cannot be finalized before the Dogwood is printed, some locations are To Be Announced (TBA). You will be notified if printed plans change.
Additional Courses Not Offered in the Dogwood:
All service units may request additional or different trainings by contacting the Adult Development Director at 862-0004 or 1-800-345-4335. There should be a minimum of ten people committed in the training before contacting the Adult Development Director.
Information on Trainers:
In almost all cases, your trainers are volunteers just like you. They receive no compensation and are giving their time to make Girl Scouting an enjoyable and worthwhile experience for the girls in your troop and for you.
I. RECOMMENDED TRAINING SEQUENCE/TIME FRAME:
Girl Scouts of Dogwood Trails Council, Inc. recommends the following training sequence and time frame to help our volunteers best prepare themselves for their work with Girl Scouts.
This is the very first step in understanding the world of Girl Scouting. This should be taken as soon as you are able. This will help get you ready for your first few meetings.
WHO? All new leaders and assistant leaders.
NOTE: This training is provided at the service unit level. Contact your School Organizer, Service Unit Manager or Field Director.
This training will be most beneficial if taken within a month of your Orientation. This training must be taken within six months of the time you are appointed as leader. When offered on a Saturday, Troop Administration is in the morning and followed by Program Level Training in the afternoon. You will need both of these trainings to complete your Basic Leader Training.
WHO? All new leaders and assistant leaders.
PREREQUISITE: Orientation
BRING: Program level handbook or leaders' guide, Safety Wise, troop packet, Leaders' Resource Manual, paper and pencil. Bring a sack lunch and drink if taking Program Level Training the same day.

DESCRIPTION: This training will enable participants to:
Identify resource materials for adult training and their position in the training progression.
Identify the parts of a meeting and begin the long-range planning for their troop.
Name some special Girl Scout days and ways and participate in a ceremony.
Use Girl Scouts of the USA and council resources to identify policies, standards and procedures to be followed by all troops in Girl Scouts of Dogwood Trails Council, Inc.
There are four program levels in Program Level Training: (DPL) - Daisy Program Level, (BPL) - Brownie Program Level, (JPL) - Junior Program Level, and (TLT) - Teen Leader Training. After completing this training, you will have completed your Basic Leader Training.
WHO? All new and experienced Girl Scout leaders and assistant leaders at each of the program levels.
PREREQUISITE: Orientation and Troop Administration Training.
BRING: Program level handbook, Safety Wise, paper and pencil. Bring a sack lunch and drink if taking Troop Administration the same day.

DESCRIPTION: This training will enable the participants to:
Identify physical, mental and social development of girls at the age level.
Identify the form of troop government, girl/adult planning appropriate for the age level.
Plan troop program for the age level.
Use GSUSA handbooks and resources to plan the program.
Identify policies, standards, troop management materials and girl recognitions appropriate for this level.
Is your troop bridging to a new level? Are you working with a level you have not yet had training for? This Program Level Training is designed specifically for the experienced leader. If you are bridging to Brownies (SSB) or Juniors (SSJ), this training is your recertification. If you are bridging to Cadette or Senior levels, you need Teen Leader Training (TLT).

DESCRIPTION: This course will give participants an in-depth look at:
Girl/Adult planning
Girl Scouts of the U.S.A. Cadette/Senior Girl Scout program.
You can now begin to prepare your girls for outdoor adventures. It will give you plenty of time to prepare for troop camping by learning and practicing the outdoor skills. Basic Outdoor Skills (BOS) is required for leaders taking girls on day hikes and similar one-day activities. Basic Troop Camping (BTC) is required for leaders taking girls on an overnight camp-out at an established site. Please request pre-course assignment when registering for course if you have not had Basic Leader Training. Credit for course will be recorded when both training and pre-course assignments are completed.
WHO? New or experienced leaders, assistant leaders and other registered adults.
PREREQUISITE: Leadership Training or pre-course assignment.
BRING: Paper, pencil, age-level handbook, Safety Wise, bandanna, pocket knife. Wear clothing for the outdoors including jacket and rain gear. Bring a sack lunch and drink (no glass) when attending a one-day session.

DESCRIPTION: This training will enable participants to teach their girls to:
Upon completion of this course, you will have the necessary first aid certification to take your group on outings (as per Safety Wise). A first aider is required for a troop or group to go troop camping. The council continues to encourage leaders and service units to arrange first aid trainings locally. A chart of equivalent courses and an outline of course requirements to meet Safety Wise requirements is available on request from the council Service Center. Service units that have been unable to arrange trainings should contact the Adult Development Director. Availability of council trainings is dependent upon number and location of trainers.
WHO? All new and experienced leaders, assistant leaders and other registered adults.
PREREQUISITE: None.
BRING: Pencil, paper and a blanket.
COST: Fee is due to the council service center at the time of registration and must be included with registration form. Fees are actual cost of training and materials charged by the American Red Cross chapter where the training is held and include the $1.00 processing fee. In Springfield - $8.00 for course only and $12.00 for the book (book is optional). In Rolla - $6.00 for course only and $13.50 for the book (book is optional).
MINIMUM: 6 participants (training cannot be held if less than six attend.)
WHO? Adults whose CPR OR First Aid is about to expire.
PREREQUISITE: Standard Fist Aid/CPR Training
BRING: Current card, book (if you have one). Length of class 1 Hour.
COST: $8.00 - Send in with registration form.
DESCRIPTION: You must present a current card for class admittence. If your card is already expired, even by 1 day, you cannot attend these classes and you will be required to take a full class.
This course is required to take a troop/group camping at an established site. You may NOT take this course the same season you take Basic Outdoor Skills (BOS). You must take the Pre-Camp listed with the overnight. Successful completion of this course certifies the participant for five years.

PREREQUISITE: Basic Outdoor Skills (BOS).
BRING:To Pre-Camp: Pencil paper, age-level handbook To Overnight: Equipment list will be determined at Pre-Camp.
COST: $12.00 to pay for cost of food for overnight and processing fee. Send in with registration form.
DESCRIPTION: This training will enable participants to:
Plan and prepare meals using a variety of outdoor cooking techniques.
Develop equipment and clothing lists for camp out.
Plan a camp out at an established site including necessary paperwork, site selection and emergency procedures.
Tie new knots and use a compass and bow saw.
Establish a campsite including pitching a tent and setting up dishwashing and garbage disposal area.
This course will only be offered in the Fall. It is for troops that want to learn more about primitive camping or camping in non-established sites. You must sign up for both pre-camp and the overnight.
WHO? Experienced leaders and assistant leaders.
PREREQUISITE: Basic Troop Camp and Leadership Training.
BRING:Pre-Camp: Pencil, paper, sack lunch, drink, unbreakable cup, daypack. Dress for the weather, rain gear is a must. Overnight: Equipment list will be determined at pre-camp.
COST: $1.00 - Send in with registration form. Food will be determined at pre-camp.
DESCRIPTION: This training will enable participants to:
Prepare advanced meals using techniques other than those used at Basic Troop Camp.
Plan and carry out a camp out at a primitive site using site selection, preparation and low-impact techniques.
Tie new knots, learn map reading skills and learn safe use of the hatchet.
Pitch a variety of tents, gain skills in equipment selection and plan for a safe experience.
This training is part of the girl program and will be offered in both the Fall and the Spring. Participants must be prepared to carry a pack weighing 20-25 lbs. for 3 to 4 miles each day. Backpacking with your Girl Scout or as a registered adult is a great way to learn new skills and develop friendships that will last a lifetime.
WHO? Experienced leaders, assistant leaders and other registered adults.
PREREQUISITE: Basic Outdoor Skills, Basic Troop Camping, and one of the following: Advanced Troop Camping, previous backpacking experience or a satisfactory interview with the Outdoor Program Director.
BRING: An equipment list will be sent upon registration. Some rental equipment is available from The LadyBug shop.
COST: $6.00 - Covers group supplies, participants bring their own breakfasts and lunches. Fee is due at time of registration.
DESCRIPTION: This training will enable participants to:
Properly equip themselves for a backpacking trip.
Use route-finding techniques for a backpacking trip.
This training is offered periodically for those leaders that want to take their troops on a winter campout.
WHO? Experienced leaders, assistant leaders and other registered adults.
PREREQUISITE: Advanced Troop Camping and Leadership Training.
BRING: Equipment list will be mailed upon registration. Bring sack lunch and drink for Friday night. Sleeping will be outdoors in tents; most activities will take place indoors.
COST: $12.00 - Send in with registration.
DESCRIPTION: This training will enable participants to:
Plan a winter outing including outdoor activities.
Keep warm outdoors in winter.
Discover what is happening in nature during this time of year.

This training will allow you to take your troop/group on an overnight camping trip to stay in the Lodge or the Staff House. This is sometimes called Facilities Training or Lodge Facilities Orientation. For tent camping or unit camping at Finbrooke, please register for Basic Troop Camping (BTC).

Issues for Girl Scouts is the current terminology for Contemporary Issues and the name of the new program resources books. This workshop will help define the role of the leader in sensitive or controversial issues, as well as give you resources for finding help when needed.

DESCRIPTION: If you love being outdoors and spending time with those who love the same things you do, or you want to learn specialized skills like wilderness survivial, wild edibles, repelling or archeology, this could be your chance. Members determine what the group does. We will visit various outdoor locations within our council jurisdiction.
WHO? Cadette leaders, Cadette Girl Scouts and parents. A leader and/or parent should accompany each girl..
PREREQUISITE: Teen Leader Training (TLT). (Will be very helpful to the leader.)

DESCRIPTION: This training will focus on how to motivate and help Cadette Girl Scouts identify her areas of interest and community needs; then relate her projects to this area.
WHO? Senior leaders, Senior Girl Scouts and parents. A leader and/or parent should accompany each girl.
PREREQUISITE: Teen Leader Training (TLT). (Will be very helpful to the leader.)
BRING: Paper and pencil.
COST: None, this is offered as part of program.
DESCRIPTION: This training will focus on how to motivate and help Senior Girl Scouts identify her areas of interest and community needs; then relate her projects to this area. This training is often held during The Gathering, in the Fall. If you are attending The Gathering, you will sign up by indicating this as a program choice. If you are not attending The Gathering, use a regular training registration form.

BRING: Water shoes, water bottle, swim suit, lunch (if taking small craft safety the same day), sun screen and towel.
COST: $8.00 (includes book). Send with registration form.
DESCRIPTION: This course meets the Safety Wise requirements for being a "watcher" assisting a lifeguard. For additional activities that require this training, check the water activity section of the Safety Wise.

PREREQUISITE: Basic Water Rescue
BRING: Water shoes, water bottle, swim suit, lunch (if taking small craft safety the same day), sun screen and towel.
COST: $10.00 (includes book). Send with registration form.
DESCRIPTION: This course, along with Basic Water Rescue, meets Safety Wise requirements for taking a troop canoeing on flat water or on level rivers. This course does NOT teach you how to canoe! You should already have those skills before taking this course.
PREREQUISITES: 1. Be able to swim 500 yards continously, using each of the following strokes for at least 100 yards each: a. Crawl Stroke (commonly referred to as freestyle) b. Breaststroke c. Sidestroke Prospective participants choose their strokes for the reamining 200 yards. There is no time requirement for this skill; there just is no stopping. 2. Submerge to a minimum depth of 7 feet, retrieve a 10-pound object, and return with it to the surface. 3. Tread water for 2 minutes using legs only. Prospective participants cross their arms across their chest, placing the hands under the armpits.
BRING: Water shoes, water bottle, swim suit, sun screen and towel.

DESCRIPTION: The above prerequisites determine whether prospective participants have the basic swimming abilities to complete the lifeguarding skills in the Lifeguard Training course. Safety Wise requires an adult lifeguard for Girl Scout water activities. Participants must be 18 years of age or older. This course includes First Aid/CPR for the professional rescuer. It includes a book, pocket mask, rental equipment and certification paperwork.
Leadership training, outdoor training and enrichment workshops are offered during the summer Festival of Training, usually held the second week of August each year. This is an opportunity for new leaders to get their training before school starts and for experienced leaders to find out about their new level or be ready for fall outings. Spend from one to four days at Finbrooke Outdoor Center. Take one course or several. Overnight accommodations will be available.

Leader's Weekend is an annual event held at Finbrooke Outdoor Center around the third week of April every year. It is a whole weekend of workshops and fun. Follow the link below to our Leader's Weekend page for more information on this event.
This training is usually held in late August to train for QSP Magazine and Candy/Nut sales.
WHO? All Service Unit Managers and Service Unit Fall Product Sale Managers are invited to attend. Dates, times and locations of these trainings will be announced by the council Products Sales Manager. Registration forms will be mailed out to the service units in early August with details.
This training is usually held immediately following the Mini-Council meetings around the second week of November each year. All Service Unit Managers and Service Unit Cookie Managers are invited to attend. Details of this training will be mailed out to the service units in October by the council Products Sales Manager.
This is a periodic training announced by the Adult Development Director. It is usually held either in January or February for an entire weekend. Apprentice trainers will learn about the Experiential Learning Cycle (ELC) and prepare to become council trainers.
This is a periodic training announced by the Adult Development Director. It is usually held at Finbrooke Outdoor Center and serves as a refresher course to keep council trainers up to date on training techniques and topics.
You are always encouraged to attend training courses where you will have the opportunity to interact with other leaders. However, if you are unable to attend some of our opportunities, consider these alternatives. Please include a $1.00 processing fee with your request.
A self directed study which directs the participant to research the appropriate program level handbooks, Safety Wise, and the Leader's Resource Manual. Participant will learn factual information about the Girl Scout program but will not have the opportunity to interact with other leaders. You may take only one leadership training in Home Study. Please submit the Home Study Application Form found in the FORMS section of your Dogwood. Home study courses are available for:
Volunteers who took Leadership or Basic Troop Camping training in the spring of 1996 are now due for recertification. These trainings are available through home study. Please use the HOME Study Application Form to request your course. Note: Leaders who have taken an additional age level training since 1993 have already met leadership recertification requirements. Basic Outdoor Skills and Basic Troop Camping recertification is also available for leaders who have moved here from other Girl Scout councils and had these trainings in their previous councils.
